45 Symbols - Right To Roam

Project type

Digitised Drawing

A set of 45 symbols inspired by English footpath routes and the topographic marks used, aiming to highlight the importance of these routes and the protection issues they currently are facing. Focusing around Frome, Somerset (my hometown) footpaths because I have grown up spending a lot of time walking on footpaths and Falmouth and the surrounding areas.

I am very passionate about these paths being preserved
for future generations and currently there are a number of issues surrounding footpaths, these are mainly access right and soil erosion. This area of research, in particular reading sections of Lines: A Brief History by Tim Ingold (published in 2007) informed the symbols. I wanted to play with the weight and pattern of the topographic lines typically used and to add movement and interest to the symbols.
